North of Napoli is another abandoned ancient city, some say better than Pompeii. Ancient stone walls, cracked and half swallowed by a wild tangle of ferns and mosses, are carefully manicured to preserve the ruins in their run-down, overgrown state. The sand-coloured stone is softened by the scent of damp earth and sweet blooms. Man-made water-ways wind through the garden, the pristine water creating a mirror-like portal. Which was how it felt stepping into the garden out of the wind and spring rain showers. A quiet retreat from the rest of the world. The dark storm clouds threatened over the cliffs for a whole hour, but not once did it even drop a spit of rain.
